Check the timetable carefully and arrive in plenty of time at the venue. Ideally you should arrive an hour before the time of your event so you can warm up
Remember to pack your club vest, 8 safety pins for your numbers, running spikes if you have them and/or trainers to compete in and tape to mark a run up.
Some tracks have a covered stand like Telford but some only have a grass space for chairs or a rug so you will need to bring your own, Some people take pop up tents but space may be limited so check out the venue before you leave
Most meetings are all day events so make sure you bring plenty of drinks and refreshments. Some venues will sell food and drink as this is a good way to raise funds for the home club as well.
Meetings are very rarely cancelled due to bad weather but make sure you come prepared for the English summer weather – sun cream, umbrellas, coats , gloves, sun hats, change of clothing etc
When you arrive at the track for a League meeting, look for the Telford team flag and your team manager so they know you are there and can give you your numbers.
If you are selected to compete in a League meeting always let the Team Manager know if you are able to do in plenty of time. The Team declaration has to be sent to the Host Club 24hrs prior to the meeting so they need to know if they need to find someone else.
If it is an Open Meeting or Championships you will need to look for Registration to collect your numbers remembering there may be a queue so allow time.
The time stated on the timetable for the event is the start time so you need to be reporting to the officials at the event at least 15mins prior to this time to give officials your details. This allows for warm up and field event practice throws or jumps. There will be no opportunity for a practice once the competition has started.
In an event of clashes between track and field events athletes should report to field event first to get in a practice and explain to the officials. Athletes should then go the track event and compete and return to the Field event immediately after the race has finished. Field Officials will always try to make sure that athletes get all their attempts but sometimes this is not always possible so athletes will miss an attempt. Timetables do not always allow for delays waiting for athletes at other events unfortunately.
Athletes should always pay attention to the Officials and listen carefully to any instructions given for health and safety reasons. Spectators are not allowed in the Field competition area or on the start lines and will be politely asked to leave.
Make sure you aware of the rules for the event you are competing in to avoid any disqualifications or no performance in a field event. Your coaches should have explained during training what these are and if they haven’t ask them.
It is important that athletes know the rules for relays as these are not practiced during training. Change over boxes and what to do if you drop the baton would be 2 things that athletes should know
Be aware of false starts and lane discipline as learning these rules at an early age means that they become second nature later on. Field Officials will also give a short briefing before the competition starts proper so athletes should listen carefully.
Athletes should not leave the Field competition area without a good reason and informing the field officials first. TV coverage will show elite athletes leaving the area to speak to their coaches but this is not encouraged at club or regional level.
If you are in a throw event you should not use another athlete’s personal implement and only use the pool equipment. If you have your own implement then this will need to be weighed and checked by the Field Referee prior to the competition.
Starting blocks can be used at some events either your own or the track ones. Always check though first.
At the end of the race and finish of a field event always acknowledge your fellow athletes and thank officials as a show of respect.
Results will be posted somewhere within the venue but please give officials time to get them checked and taken to the Results team for entering on the computer. Do not harass the Results team either. They will be posted as soon as they can so please be patient.
If you have finished competing in all your events, letting your Team Manager know when you are leaving is always a good idea just in case they need you for another event due to no shows.
If you are unable to compete on the day due to illness or injury, always let your Team Manager know by text so they can try and find another athlete to fill the event and change the team sheet. Things happen which can’t be helped sometimes so they will understand
