Shropshire Schools Track and Field Championships.
Alex Nwenwu from Thomas Telford School was in record breaking form as he
smashed the previous 100m hurdles mark by 4 tenths of a second to win in
13.8, a new personal best. Alex who last year won a silver medal at the
English Schools Track and Field Championships at 80m hurdles has now moved
up into the older age group and is finding the longer distance and higher
hurdles to his liking. The previous championship best was shared between 3
athletes, one mark dating back to 1984. For this superb performance he was
awarded the Bristow Sports Trophy for the best boys performance on the day.
Alex also won the 100m in 11.5.
The girls trophy was won by Bethan Partridge of Oldbury Wells School who
cleared a new personal best height of 1.69 and an English Schools
qualifying height.She was also not far from a qualifying distance in the
triple jump where she leapt to victory with 11.21m.
The meeting attracted hundreds of athletes from most schols and colleges
from throughout Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Authorities. There was a
minutes silence impeccably marked for Brian Cunningham of Nescliffe who died
last week. Brian was a long established athletics coach with Shrewsbury
Athletic Club who had done so much for Shropshire athletes for many years
especially combined events athletes when for many years he organised the
county championships.
Kez Ogden from Lakelands School, Ellesmere, had the distinction of being the
only junior girls to take two titles as she won the high jump clearing 1.46,
a full 15 centimetres higher than anything else as well as an impressive win
in the 75m hurdles in 12.5 a new personal best.
Leila Armstrong Green, from Shrewsbury Girls High School the Shropshire
Heptathlon champion, ran 12.1 for the intermediate girls 80m hurdles which
equals the English Schools entry standard although she has already run
quicker at the Midland Championships where she finished third. She also won
the long jump clearing 5.20m. Amelia Reynolds,from Thomas Telford School,
English Schools silver medallist at Gateshead last year won the shot, 9.77m
and discus 31.76m. Midland Champion Cerian Lancaster from Church Stretton
was another double winner in this age group as she strode to victory in the
300m in 42.6 and the 800m in 2.20.2.
Emma Pullen from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College ran an impressive 400m in
58.2, well inside an English Schools qualifying mark in the senior girls age
group.
Josh Geritz from Thomas Telford School was a double winner in the junior
boys triple jump clearing 10.64 and 800m running 2.16.4, winning by a
massive 13 seconds. Ashley James from William Brookes comfortably won the
100m in 12.7 and was later second in 25.6 to Adams Newport's Dave Edwards in
the 200m,25.5. There was a close contest in the javelin with Kieran
Honeywell winning with a 36.25m throw with silver medallist Aiden Reynolds
from Thomas Telford just 2 centimetres behind.
Toby Griffiths from Mary Webb School, 6th in last years English Schools
800m, ran what was almost an exhibition race as he won the intermediate boys
800m in 1.58.3, an English Schools entry standard. He also won the 400m in
impressive style in 53.4. Ben Riekstins from Idsall School recovered wel to
win the 200m in 23.3 after pulling up with cramp in the 100m final after
winning his heat in the days fastest time of 11.4. In a high quality triple
jump competition Namdi Odum from Adams Newport jumped an entry standard of
13.13m with Micahel Pugh of Marches not far behind with a 12.93 performance.
Midland Champion Chris Carter comfortably won the 1500m in 4.22. Edward
Dawes from Idsall was a double champion as he won the pole vault clearing
2.40m and the high jump clearing 1.72m.
Shropshire decathlon champion Jason Green won the senior boys high jump,
1.81m and shot 11.78m and guested in the pole vault clearing 3.10m. Sam
Tough from Adams, produced a good quality discus performance throwing 38.39m
in his first year in the senior age group.
Shropshire teams in the junior and intermediate age groups now travel to the
Mason Trophy Inter County Meeting on Saturday facing top class competition
from 7 other counties.
