The re surfaced athletics track at the London Road Sports Centre was the
venue for the annual Shropshire Schools Year 7 and 8 Track and Field
Championships. The event has been traditionally held at the Park Hall
Stadium, Oswestry, but that stadium's closure conveniently coincided with
the re surfacing of the Shrewsbury track, funded by the Shrewsbury Borough
Council. The work on the track was only finished days before the
championships, the new synthetic surface was christened as it held its first
ever competition as a county championship was held at the venue for the
first time for many years.
Olutobi Ogundipe of Burton Borough School, Newport was a sprint double
champion winning the Year 7 boys 100m,131.6 and 200m 28.1. Guy Gregory of
Lacon Childe School won a very close 1000m race in 3.18.3 just 4 tenths
ahead of Ryan Heath from Ercall Wood.
In the Year 7 girls age group, Charlton School, Wellington, scored a double
middle distance double as Kelsey Collins,800m,2.41.0 and Chloe
Murphy,1000m,3.34.1 both won their races. Hannah Bills-Brown of Bridgnorth
Endowed was a clear winner in the javelin with a throw of 25.88m.
Adams Newport's James Wilkins scored an unusual double in the Year 8 age
group as he won the 200m in 26.1 as well as the 1500m in 4.55.2. Sam Bagnall
of Mary Webb School, was the only boy to dip under a minute in the 400m
clocking 58.9 to win. Chris Rickets of the Marches School, Oswestry was a
clear winner of the javelin throwing 29.14m. Thomas Telford School won 4 of
the individual events with Josh Cox,100m in 12.6, Josh Geritz,800m,2.17.4,
Ryan Flannery,high jump,1.48 and Chris Newbury, triple jump 10.17.
sophie Alderson of Shrewsbury Girls High School was an impressive double
winner of the Year 8 girls 100m in 13.4 and the long jump with 4.02.
Shrewsbury Girls High students dominated this age group as Emma Tonkin
800m,2.44.1 and Grace Chadwick,shot,7.85 also won their events and the
school won their second relay of the day.
The Shropshire Schools Year 7 and Year 8 teams now have an inter county
meeting with Staffordshire at the Telford Stadium on Monday 17th July.
