Shropshire Schools hosted a prestigious inter county cross country meeting in the grounds of the Lilleshall National Sports Centre, near Newport on Saturday. Strong county teams from Staffordshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Surrey presented the toughest opposition that Shropshire athletes will face outside the national championships.Some 93 Shropshire athletes took part in the 6 races producing some excellent results.

Ceriannae Lancaster, from Church Stretton School, winner of this years South Shropshire Schools championships had the best Shropshire result of the day as she finished 5th in the Year 10/11 girls race in 16.31, behind the Cheshire athlete who won in 15.53. Cerianne was well supported with Thomas Telford's Laura Pacey, silver medallist in last summers English Schools 800m was 11th, 16.42 in her first race in this age group. Megan Lloyd, Cerianne Lancaster's training partner also from Church Stretton School, was next home in 25th,17.38. Emma Askins from Bridgnorth Endowed was 34th in 18.02 whilst Wrekin College's Jenny Young 39th in 18.15 completed the scoring 6 as Shropshire finished 3rd with 130 pts behind Cheshire 64 pts and West Midlands 2nd with 120 pts.

Huw Bevan from Idsall School was the only other Shropshire athlete to finish in the top 10 as he came home 9th, 12.34 in the Year 7 boys race. Huw was selected for this race after winning all 4 races in the Telford Schools League earlier this term. Madeley Court's Liam Wells also ran well to finish 11th in 12.37, whilst Lord Silkin's Tom Mumford also got in the top 20 finishing 15th in 12.43.the North Shropshire Schools Champion Joe Morris from the Marches School was 24th in 12.56. Tom's brother Liam Mumford was 31st in 13.12 whilst Ed Fowler from Adams Newport was 32nd in 13.13. Despite having 6 in the top 32 the team had to settle for 5th place with 122 pts behind winners Warwickshire with 92 pts.

Josh Ogden from Lakelands School, Ellesmere won the North Shropshire Year 10/11 Championships in October as well as the opening North Wales League race at Colwyn Bay, led the Shropshire team home in 12th place in 19.26. Abraham Darby's Toby Birtwhistle was next home in 35th 20.38, with Wrockwardine Wood's Chris Carter 40th in 20.59. The scoring 6 was completed by Burton Borough's Oliver Parker 50th, 21.18 also Dale Griffiths, Ludlow School 52nd in 21.24 whilst international triathlete Ryan Ordidge from Wrekin College was 55th in 21.30.The team were 7th behind impressive winners Cheshire who had 6 in the top 20.

Niamh Frain, who is from Wellington and a student at Moreton Hall was the first Shropshire runner home in the Year 7 girls race finishing 13th in 10.01, with sarah Lovewell from Shrewsbury Girls High School 18th, 10.18 whilst Burton Borough's Daniella Horne 21st in 10.26. Idsall's Nancy Ndwe was next home in 23rd in 10.28 with North Shropshire champion Lauren Bathers of Marches School 25th in 10.29 as her Marches team mate Georgina Butler completed the scoring 6 in 27th 10.31.

Charlton School's Kelsey Collins led the Shropshire Year 8/9 girls team home in 33rd in 13.24, she was 15 seconds ahead of her Charlton team mate Chloe Murphy the next finisher in 40th, 13.39 the same time as Moor Park's Jaala Kenchington in 41st. Harriet Little from Shrewswbury Girls High was the 4th county finisher in 54th, 13.59, with Marches Stephanie Butler 56th 14.02, with a third Charlton runner Lucy Kesek 6th scorer in 63rd 14.19.The team were 9th with 287 pts.

Burton Borough's Alex Russell who won 2 of this years Telford School's league race was the first county runner home in the junior boys age group for Year 8/9 boys, finishing 18th in 15.43. Thomas Telford's Josh Geritz who is the reigning Shropshire Schools junior boys champion was the next runner home in 21st, 15.46. Adams, Newport's Tom Buckley was 32nd in 16.02, with his team mate James Wilkins 46th in 16.21, whilst the South Shropshire Schools champion Ryan Lockley from Ludlow School was 48th in 16.26 whilst the North Shropshire Champion Zac Swannick completed the scoring 6 in 50th,16.30.The team, were 6th.
