Shropshire Young Athletes Cross Country League Meeting 4 Bridgenorth 10-Dec-06 |

The fourth and final round of the Shropshire Star sponsored Shropshire Young Athletes Cross Country League was held at a windswept Oldbury Wells School, Bridgnorth on the undulating and demanding courses, with two athletes completing clean sweep of four victories for the season. Matthew Jones of Oswestry Olympians was unbeaten in the Under 11 boys age group coming home to win at Bridgnorth in 6.44 with six seconds to spare over Idris Jones of Ludlow and Jon Fletcher of Bridgnorth taking third in 6.55. With 5 boys in the top 9 places, host club Bridgnorth comfortably won the team race and with it the league title. Telford AC's Ryan Heath, from Wellington was the only other unbeaten athlete as he won all 4 Under 13 boys races. He took the lead after 200m and ran away from a strong field to finish in 11.34. Bridgnorth's Huw Bevan had his best league run to take second in 11.57 while Greg stokes in 3rd led a quartet of runners filling the next 4 places and win the team race on the day. Ryan Heath comfortably won the overall title with twin brothers Ryan and Greg Stokes taking second and third. Alex Russell,from Muxton, won the Under 15 boys title after winning the last 3 races, this one in 14.49, his Telford AC team mate Dennis Gardner repeated his second place in the opening race in 15.18. Oswestry's Toby Blake the winner at Newport returned to action to take 3rd in 15.28. The Under 11 girls was an exciting race as Bridgnorth's Jenny Cotham eventually came home the winner in 7.25 and after winning the last three races takes the overall title. Telford's Emily Wright took second place with 7.31 whilst third placed Sarah Williams was making her league debut for Maldwyn Harriers.As many of the leading finishers had only run 2 races the overall second and third places were hotly contested with Telford's Sarah Howells and Ludlow's Megan Turner just getting the verdicts on total times over the best 3 races.Telford won the team race on the day whilst Oswestry Olympians comfortably took the league title. The under 13 girls was probably the most competitive age group with Kelsey Collins of Telford winning on the day in 8.31 with 18 seconds to spare over Ludlow's Jaala Kenchington taking second and Shrewsbury's Harriet Grandfield third in 8.54. Kelsey and Jaala have both won two league races, but Jaala, from Hope Bagot near Ludlow, retained her overall league title due to her better 4th race performance where she came 2nd against Kelsey's 3rd place with Harriet Grandfield taking 3rd overall. Telford AC took the team race on the day as well as the league title. Rhiannon Linnington Payne who had finished 3rd in the opening race at Newport, recovered to win the next three races moving away on the final hill at Bridgnorth to win in 12.06 with Ludlow's Megan Lloyd taking her 3rd second place finishing in 12.23 with Telford's Nicole Hilliker 3rd in 12.32.Bridgnorth comfortably won the team race on the day as well as the league title. Eight clubs took part in the league this season with Maldwyn and Aberystwyth joining the league. Oswestry Olympians won the overall girls title with Telford second and Bridgnorth third, whilst Telford won the boys trophy with Oswestry second and again Bridgnorth third. With the Shropshire League now complete athletes are now focussing on the championships in the new year starting with the Shropshire Cross Country Championships to be held at Lilleshall on Saturday 6th January, these are followed by the Midland Champs then the Shropshire Schools, Inter Counties, National and English Schools.
